  • A Special Day

Do You know what today is?

I suppose that is a silly question to some of you- depending on where you go to school, work, or how much television you watch. For me- since I do not watch television much, and I work in the home, I actually remembered myself on my own! I woke up this morning wondering when this day was coming around, asked Kat, and she told me it was TODAY!

("Is that a baby?! Gimme your baby, I want to eat it... oh, wait, that's right, I'm Irish not Scottish... never ye mind that Lass!"
    "AAaaaaaaah! Get AWAY!")

If you do not get the joke then... just forget about it. :P It is Saint Patrick's Day, and in our home- no, not my parents, not the Flanagan clan, just in OUR home, it is a special holiday we plan to pass down to our children. There are multiple reasons why today is such a special day in our household. But tonight, we have some special plans. We will probably do it differently each year, but this year, I am thinking we will stay at our apartment. I'll share more about it afterwards, definitely. We have some family traditions we have started, and since we're an Irish family I suppose you could call them Irish traditions. As for me, I'll just call them Flanagan traditions we've begun.

  • Ladder to Success

    Climbing the Ladder

We have been praying and putting our
financial situation, and Katrina’s, in God’s hands in particular since last
fall. Katrina felt God lay a message on her heart- that if we seek after Him
with all our hearts, God will provide all we need and beyond. It may sound
generic, but- well, sometimes less is more in communicating a message. Recently
I was looking over life and thinking- wow, if God is providing for us anyway,
that is true mercy, because I think a good part of my heart is lagging behind
on my end of the deal. I am trying, but still- all my heart, and a
smidgeon of my heart, are still quite different. I feel like the man who said
to Jesus, “Lord, I believe! But… help my unbelief!”

Despite this, God is working. Last fall
Katrina saw a job opening elsewhere at work, but felt God telling her not to go
after it- that it was not the right time. She was still pregnant then. So, she
talked to me about it, and we both decided not to try- to wait. After coming
back to work, she began to seriously pursue openings- looking at jobs in and
out of the company. For a long time at work it has seemed that despite her
investing herself and really standing out for her heart, she was not really
appreciated by her superiors- that her work was taken, used, and she was kept
where she was at so she could keep doing that work. She was doing the work of
someone above her and paid entry level wages- entry level wages with a college
education, a scholarship background, graduating first (or second- I think
first) in her High School class, and a list of work recommendations behind her
both volunteer and paid (she’s really proud of the girl scout gold award or
such she got- apparently the highest level you can possibly reach in girl
scouts, and nothing to scoff at). I’m sooo proud of my wife. I believe I
    ‘married up’, personally.

The only reason she did not get started
higher in a career track is her choice of major- religious studies- did not
allow for it… at least, not in the line she chose. She probably could have gone
a lot of different ways, and been helped by colleagues in her school. But she
did not- she came here, and started work at Home Depot sitting out in
the hot sun and lifting heavy loads some men (like ME) couldn’t lift before
moving to a much better line of work at Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS SC).

A position in training in another part of
BCBS opened up- that would pay a LOT more than now- and she pursued it, doing
so meant taking a special test they had added not too long ago. She passed it-
and only after passing it did she realise how BIG an accomplishment that was
    there.

    Cock of the Walk

Katrina went on with life as normal- no
word yet on the training job- but everyone else did not. Apparently, another worker
who had worked there (I’m trying to remember- forgive me if I’m not exact) for
six or more years had taken that test four times- waiting the required six
months between each time- and failed every time, and she had a college
education as well. Of course, since the test was relatively new, not all the
supervisors had taken it (lucky them!) but it was not an easy bar to pass. That
Kat passed it her first try- well, Kat admitted afterwards that it was a tough
test especially since there seemed to be no real right or wrong answer to some
of the questions. A hard test, but, still, just a test.

Of course, suddenly, after the test
everything changed. Her supervisors started asking her to attend meetings for
them in their place- to take notes, etc. She was asked recently to run a system
test (they repair or add new parts to the system, then have supervisors test
them before a general release- this is VERY important, because if it goes out
with errors, the company looses a LOT of money. Only supervisors do it normally).
She is also doing work for another supervisor of a related, but different,
section since she is doing all she can do in her own department. Only, unlike
before, she seems to be recognized for her work- and her supervisors have
recommended her for another supervisor position beyond the training one that
pays even MORE. I won’t be specific because I know Kat likes our privacy. Right
now we make under 24k a year- and we’re struggling to pay even our basic bills
without help from our parents (both sides
J ). If she negotiates well, the supervisor position could pay close
to double what we currently make. It also fits where Kat is at- it requires
a college degree, two years experience at BCBS, as well as other training
things that Kat has done or is doing right now. It would be a difficult
position to start in, too- I told Kat we should pray, to make sure that
training OR supervisor, we choose the one GOD wants us to be in, not just the
    one that pays the most.

    Food glorious food!

Last night, after she shared about how
things were going, I laid back on the couch and smiled. I shared how if God
blesses us with more funds, we need to spend towards the NET (how much we
ACTUALLY get in our pockets/bank account) not the GROSS (the total she makes in
a year before taxes). Also, we need to live just as we are living now- only
being able to actually get what we need without requiring parental help. We
should not “expand to fill our britches” as they say, and end up feeling we
    need more money again.

I smiled and said, “Just think how great it
will be, to actually be able to have enough money to pay for all the food we
need without using my parent’s credit card. Get all the fresh green beans,
lettuce, corn, and other vegetables we need to feed the two- and later, three-
of us. To get the meat we want, maybe even have some regular nice meals. To not
have to worry about paying the heating/air and power bills every month. To be
able to fix the air conditioning in your car and actually start saving money so
if something goes wrong with either car, we don’t have to worry about where the
money might come from. To even have enough money to know we can give even more
than our tithe to the Church and other ministries.”

I look back and I realise that it is good,
where God has led us. We should appreciate everything we have, and where
it comes from. We should be happy to use our money to comfortably get the
necessities we need- the food, the clothes, the air around us. Katrina was
eager to be able to get one or two new outfits for her new job- maybe even a
new suit or two for me, since I do not have anything resembling a suit, and
even the sold one resembling one is too small now for me. Kat- God bless her
loving spirit- while she has her strengths and weaknesses both, has sacrificed
something most women would never want to, and that is clothing. Some articles
of essentials she only has three of, and will wash them in the bath to keep
clean during the week so she has a clean change of clothes for the next day.

    Perspective

You know, I would laugh if someone said we
were poor. First of all, my parents have helped us to get what we need- truth
be told, we’d be in debt without their help. As it is, we have NO debt, and we
will do everything we can to never have to be in debt at all, even for a house
and especially for a car. My parents won’t always be there- their health is
slowly failing and when my Dad cannot work, they will need all their resources
to pay off their debts and live themselves. So God is easing us into a place
where we are independent finally. But we’re still, even as we are, doing well-
because look at the space we have. We have a two bedroom, 1.5 bath apartment
with a nicely sized kitchen. We don’t HAVE to own it- renting is fine- and
there are families of seven, ten, or more in other countries like Korea, China,
Africa, all over the world who live in smaller places than this! I look at our
house, this room I am typing in now, and I think, Wow, God, this is almost a
waste of space. There could be a sleeping palette in this room, two in the
living room, we could even have someone sleeping in the kitchen and it would
still be comfortable here. We could use cold water outside to wash in the
Summer and give baths to plenty more people than just us.
    I realise how
lucky we are- and while in America our income is considered ‘working class’ and
people with our amount of money consider themselves poor… and I admire those
families like us who do NOT have help, who do NOT have parents blessing them,
who have MORE children… regardless, we would be doing well in poorer countries.
We would be more like middle class in many countries or towns around the world.

So I think of this, and realise that God
might give us so much more- and I realise that what our Pastor said a few
sermons ago (probably Feb 26, maybe March 5) is very true. What we have does
NOT belong to us- it belongs to God, and God is merely letting us use it. The
sooner we realise that, the easier it is to part with things. Also, the more we
realise we must take good care of what we have- otherwise called good
    stewardship.

Lord, thank you for what you have presently
blessed Katrina and myself with. Thank you for the promises of provision you
have given us- and however you provide, be it through the two jobs Katrina sees
open to her now, or some other way, thank you for this. Thank you for the
loving prayers of those who have prayed on our behalf for your provision and
Katrnia’s job, and beyond. Thank you for providing despite my lack of
dedication- Lord, I believe but help my unbelief.

    Sincerely,

    Patrick

  • No Need for Extinction

    11 Million Year "Lazarus" effect?

I am suprised at how hard it was to find a simple picture of this animal from official news sources- but if you google it, whala, here it is. The illustrations certainly do NOT do the Diatomyidae justice. What you are looking at above is the Diatomyidae, who died 11 million years ago.

"Ummmmm... Patrick... I hate to burst your bubble or anything... but that's a picture. There weren't cameras that long ago."

Ooops. Okay, how about this then.

    Happy?

    "Patrick?"
    Yes?
"That doesn't explain that picture up there."

Ohhh, yeah, that. Well, first of all, it is interesting to know the difference between how scientist's drawings look and the ACTUAL thing looks. Pretty close in body, but the nose- that poor little guy probably doesn't appreciate being drawn with such a long snout. I know eleven million years from now, if someone reconstructs me and gives me such a long schnoz I'd be VERY unhappy. He definitely looks happier than I would. He even looks rather spry.

"Patrick? You're still not answering my question."

Oh okay, okay. There's an article here about it. In Laos they discovered a rodent spieces thought dead (notice I say THOUGHT) eleven million years ago. Apparently they have found spieces from thousands, maybe even at most one million years, dead that were actually alive- but never eleven million. They cannot explain how it is possible. Heh. Maaaybe it would be more possible if it was not million in the first place, but thousand? Maybe? Kinda? Bet they haven't thought of that. Ever think perhaps the whole Noah, Flood, and young Earth theory holds a little more weight?

Nope, they are quickly thinking of a reason that is "religion-less". Doubt me? Just wait. They'll tell you some very plausible explanation in a few months. I have one now, but that's fine, listen to theirs. Just remember- sometimes simple is actually true. Anytime it takes months and huge explanations to figure out WHY, the pre-existing and formerly thought 'debunked' (NOT) theory might work. That the Earth is really only thousands of years old- not millions or billions- and that little rodent guy's great, great, great x10 grandfather was actually on the arkey that the Lord had Noah build.

Anyway, Laos is where it was found- in Asia. Wish I was there- it'd be nice to find one and take it in as a pet. Did you know they found it for sale in a meat-market? People were eating a potentially endangered "11 million year old" species for dinner. Now THAT is one exotic hackuvan expensive meal! And they did not even know it! Here's this rather poor family, feeling put upon to have to eat some sticky little rodent, and they are actually sitting there dining on something probably worth millions of dollars at the least.

    Funny how life works.

The scientists call the fact that this 'dead' species is actually alive the- get this- "Lazarus effect". HELLO! I call it the "Noah effect" but both work! Either way, Biblical terms- Biblical reasons!

So just remember. If you ever go on a tropical expedition, get lost, and are forced to live off of stray animals and bugs- that tropical worm you are eating COULD be a billion year old ancestor of man that someone is willing to pay millions for. You are actually eating a gourmet meal fit for kings! Really! Enjoy!

    -Patrick

NOTE- On a more thoughtful, scientific note, it is interesting to note WHERE the scientists got off. You notice in a lot of prehistoric drawings they have a somewhat primitive look- the heads have longer snouts, areas where cartlidge is are more pronounced, etc. If you compare the pictures above, notice how the body is almost identical. Because it is shaped by bones, the artist did a good job getting it right. But look at the head. After they get to the ears- which work fine- everything else is blown OUT of proportion! The drawing looks like some prehistoric anteating baboon squirrel you would definitely see in a movie. The picture, though- look how different it is! The head is JUST like something we would see today- just another sort of rodent head, sleek and cute with brilliant eyes. Not awkwards at all. So much so, in fact, that originally scientists thought it was a NEW breed of rodent- not an OLD one!

Any of you feeling a little more interesting in the Biblical account of creation yet? What, aren't you making the links? Scientists ASSUME that because of evolution, animals MUST have evolved over millions of years. So, to connect rodents into the record of this 'evolution', they have to draw it like it FITS. But if you look at this rodent- it does NOT fit the drawing. Shame on them! I wonder how many other prehistoric creatures are WAY off the drawings? We may not ever know- but it is very interesting to think on it.

  • Hey Terrorists- why bother with planes?

Kat was reminding me, when talking about some disaster potentials (natural disasters) about the prediction of a cliff in Africa. Supposedly, there is a huge chunk of cliff in Africa that will fall off into the sea soon- it isn't a question of if, just when. When it does, it is predicted to have the potential to produce a tremendous tital wave that would wipe out the Eastern coast of the US.

So, here's my question to all those "super smart" terrorists. Why spend all your time bothering with infiltrating the US, high-jacking planes, and all that stuff? Just bribe the African government of that place (sadly, bribery is a HUGE issue in Africa) and plant some easily obtainable explosives all around the cliff face- BLOW it up, so it falls into the sea, and give nature a "push"... whala, instant wiiiipe-out for Eastern USA. Brilliant terrorist plot that involves absolutely no touching the US.

Of course, this just proves the terrorists are stupid. If they weren't, they'd have thought of this long ago. Or.... maybe they already have, and while our government focuses on plane security they're planting dynamite over in Africa as we speak. :P

  • No Need for Super Fusion

Okay, I enjoy science. But sometimes things come around- discoveries and inventions- that are just SOOO cool I HAVE to share them! This is one of those things.

This Z-machine is in Alb, New Mexico (Hey NM Mom, I hope it doesn't blow up on you guys! If it does, NM will be hit by heat hotter than the core of the sun! :P ). It is created as the 'mega gun'- it uses a magnetic field to propel small objects just faster than the speed the Earth itself travels through space. When these itty-bitty little disks impact, just the SHOCK WAVES from that impact are enough to turn solids into liquids, liquids into gasses, and gasses into plasma! Youch! When the shock wave of a 'bullet' hitting something is enough to melt you into a blob, just think how the thing HIT by it must feel!

Take a look at the Z machine here!

Okay, as if that isn't neat enough. Well, let me give you a short explanation. They INTENDED the z machine to do that nifty cool stuff. Just this month- by accident- they found out it does something ELSE! Let me give you a comparison chart to explain.

The following lists the temperature, Kelvin (not Farenheight), at different places.

Inner core of the sun- 15 million degrees Kelvin
Inside a nuclear explosion- around 100 million degress Kelvin more or less
Some of Earth's finest nuclear fusion tests ever- up to 500 million degres Kelvin
Z machine (by accident, they don't know HOW)- 3.6 BILLION degrees Kelvin

Yep. My Mother-in-Law was probably drinking a coke in her livingroom while in the same city someone is baking up an experiment hotter than anything we know exists- and the highest temperatures EVER achieved on our planet, in our history.

How cool is that? That also means nuclear fusion, baby! Read up on the NEW z-machine stuff!

Don't write this off! This is some really neat stuff. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand the comparison above. It's a little like this- you have a match, you have a candle, you have a torch... right now, we can only generate up to a candle, and we've only even seen a blow torch. So suddenly, along comes a forest fire.

Or perhaps you could imagine we have a snail. Then we have a donkey... and we saw a horse gallop by.
Then along comes a super-sonic jet faster than we can even hear.

Yes, that just about does it. We may not know exactly WHAT to do with it yet, but it's pretty darn cool the potential. Katrina immediately recognised it's possibilities for FUSION! Fusion requires getting something REALLY hot first to start the reaction- then you can keep it going at lower temps and generate HUGE power amounts without the nuclear waste generated by FISION. :)

    Now THAT is cool science.

  • No Need of Humour

    Silly Little Joke

There was a faithful farmer during some hard times- there was not a lot of rain, the crops had not been doing very well for a few years. His only hope was to marry off his daughter. One Sunday, she came home to her Daddy and spoke excitedly to him.
    "Daddy, daddy, guess what?"
Thinking this could only mean one thing, his eyes lit up and he asked, "What, darlin', what is it? Tell yer Daddy what happened!"
"I had a long talk with Pastor today after Church...!"
Well, the pastor wasn't quite what he had in mind, but still... he wouldn't turn his mind from it yet. "Annnd...?"
"And now I'm married to Jesus! I'm going to go off to some people far away for the rest of my life!" she said with joy.
Her Father was silent, somewhat shocked for a few moments.
"Daddy! Daddy? What is it? What are you thinking?" She asked, concerned at his reaction.

After a moments pause, he shook his head with wide eyes, "Well, darlin', I always been prayin' ta God that ye'd marry up, see? I just ne'er quite meant THAT far up."

A little joke written by yours truly. :)

  • No Need for Honour

My Dream- To Be a Part of a Game Team

It has always been a dream of mine to be a part of a game design team in some way. When I say always, I really mean a childhood dream that started when I was nine or ten years old in 1990. My first immersive game experience was The Legend of Zelda, by Nintendo. However, my first computer game experience in that manner was by Sierra On-line and entitled Kings Quest IV- The Perils of Rosella. It was THE most advanced fully animated and cinematic games of its time. I played it first at a friends house, then when we got our computer (a pristine, brand new IBM 286 computer... ha ha, my video card and sound card are more powerful than that now I imagine) I bought "The Black Cauldren" by them- and shortly thereafter Kings Quest IV. I discovered Quest for Glory soon after, and that series became my favourite over time. My sister and I used to play it with her watching- she did not like to play as much as watch- and we would go outside and roleplay together, pretending we were making up our own computer game.

I was always the main character, and she would "monster"- basically, play all the NPC (non-player characters) I interacted with. We had a blast at it, and it enriched our imaginations in such a way that we both went on to roleplay as we became teens. It also gave us the minds for writing, as well.

    Now I'm There

I planned, until age ninteteen, to go into game design. Before that I had a wonderful experience in Trinidad and felt eventually I would go into missions, studying other cultures overseas when I was much older, but gradually put it off. Then, after a programming course where I realised that hard-core programming was not my style, I went to Church and it hit me that all my talents, skills, abilities... everything, were great for game design, but not for programming code. God has something else in store- and that is when missions, and shortly after that Intercultural Studies, became my focus. So here I am now.

Yet of all things, wouldn't it be funny that I am now a part- if not in design, more in the testing phase- of a computer game team! Not any team either! The adventure style games, that Sierra started, gradually faded from the scene- now all the games out there are much different. Yet an incredible company, listed below, is taking fan support to create their first unique adventure game in the Sierra style and out of 370 fans I- by God's grace- have the chance to be a beta tester.

    Beta WHAT?

Beta tester. You have two phases of the game. Alpha phase is when the game is in the middle of development. Beta phase is after the game creation process itself is done, but the game is being checked for errors, smooth play, etc. It is great because one gets a 'first look' at it. It is not so great, for some at least, because one also had to deal with all the uncleaned bugs and issues in the game. I am, however, very lucky because 1) the bugs do not bother me all that much, and 2) the designers of this games did a GREEEEAT job getting them out! So it has been a wonderful experience.

There will be a FREE demo of the entire FIRST act- speach, graphics, intro, everything. It will come out even before the main game, and that is why I am testing it as we speak. I encourage all of you to give it a look- it doesn't take a powerful system, and it is a fun puzzle/story game. Don't expect Shrek graphics- just expect some light, but well made cartoon style graphics in the manner of the Sierra games of the 90's.

  • Some pics for my beta test of Al Emmo

I'm doing a beta test of an upcoming FIRST release game called "Al Emmo"- a great, funny 'western meets city' comic type game where the joke is mostly on the protagonist. I'm part of a wonderful, small group volunteering to run the game through the wringer and prepare it for release. So, above are some pics to represent various 'issues' I come against. :)

Thought I'd share em for fun.
